Whether you’d like to eat and drink in store, or take some tasty truffles, blocks and treats home to enjoy later, there’s something for every chocolate fanatic.

With shops around the state, this South Aussie favourite is a hit in the Hills. The well-known brand – proud members of the I Choose SA campaign – are still made in South Australia by Robern Menz, after 150 years of business. They offer a delectable range of products including their original Apricot FruChocs, chocolate honeycomb, chocolate coffee beans, giant chocolate frogs and their recently launched vegan FruChos. Take the family, gather your pals – you’ll all go home with a bag (or five).

The Fudge Shop
With over 40 sweet and tasty flavours, The Fudge Shop handcrafts each little piece of fudge that walks out their scrumptious store. Featuring a range of chocolates, salted caramel, butterscotch and their famous chilli chocolate, they’ve got a flavour for every sweet tooth in the family. Get chewing, folks.

The old-fashioned Hahndorf Sweets smells as good as it looks, that all-memorable sweet shop whiff washing over you as soon as you step in the door. Childhood memories abound here, with a range of sugary, chocolatey treats on offer from all over the globe. There’s Wonka Bars (will you be lucky enough to find a Golden Ticket?) and a collection of American chocolates the likes of specialty M&Ms, Hershey’s, Baby Ruth and Reese’s peanut butter cups (these have a cult following, folks – well worth a try).

Kitchen 2C is a local favourite, and when it comes to a chocolate-fix, they’ve got you sorted. Our top pick? Their Belgian Chocolate Waffles with Dolce banana caramel sauce – it ticks so many boxes. They also make their own chocolate ganache with 58% couverture chocolate, cream, dark brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and allspice – yum! To top it off, all this deliciousness goes into their Chunky Spiced Hot Chocolate (the chunky part is a generous scoop of chocolate chips).

Indulge in a selection of delectable chocolates from around the world, paired perfectly with Hahndorf Hill wines as you overlook this picturesque property. Come rain, hail or shine, this is an experience like no other. Let the staff guide you, or select the pairing choices to match your own palate. If you’re not much of a drinker, you can skip the wine and just try the chocolate, too.

Natura’s Artisan Ice Cream
Family-owned Natura’s Artisan Ice Cream has been producing the goods on the main street of Hahndorf since 1999. With over 60 flavours – many gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan – you won’t know where to start. One of their most popular chocolate creations is their chilli chocolate ice cream. Go on, get a little adventurous.

With an enticing dessert display along the street, you won’t be able to walk past Farm Gate Providore without your mouth watering. Home to a gigantic chocolate fountain, this little gem is chocoholic is heaven. A treasure trove for all things sweet, they also have macarons, strudel and cakes. Let temptation take you in – it’s well worth a gander.

Beerenberg Family Farm
When it comes to chocolate-covered fruit, Beerenberg’s chocolate freeze-dried strawberries are a cult hit around these parts, regulars coming from near and far for these little beauties. Available for purchase at the Beerenberg Family Farm shop, they’re described as strawberry-like honeycomb covered in delicious milk or dark chocolate. Crunchy, crispy, sweet and addictive, these little delights will have you coming back.

Gulf Brewery is a micro-brewery producing hand-crafted boutique beers. Housed in a charming old building on the main street, the brewery is a top spot to relax by the fire in winter, or sit outside and soak up the sun in the warmer months. Offering a unique range of brews, there’s a pint for every palate. For chocolate fiends, there’s a smooth dark chocolate stout, using chocolate malt and Belgian cocoa in the brew process for a frothy chocolate hit.

There’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly-cooked waffle cones – something Royal Copenhagen ice creamery have been perfecting in Australia since 1982. The Hahndorf location has a sweet 18 flavours to choose from, plus a choice of toppings (chocolate, nut dip anyone?). They don’t just do ice cream either, with hot chocolates, waffles and more to choose from. Oh my!

Well known for its pizzas, hearty main courses and big breakfasts, The Haus also has a decadent dessert menu. Chocolate-lovers, try the Chocolate Marquise with Cointreau infused orange jelly, chocolate dust and mascarpone cream. There’s also a Mars Bar Cheesecake, or the Haus-made chocolate brownie served with chantilly cream. Oh me, oh my! They also stock Barossa Valley’s Brewing’s Choc Coffee Stout, too, if you’re craving a frothy pint.

Ye Olde Ice Creamery
Look for the old-style gelato cart parked on the footpath and you know you’ve made it to Ye Olde Ice Creamery. The hard part? Deciding which flavour to choose. Proudly South Australian-owned, Evercream Gelati are renowned for their authentic gelati and sorbets. Crafted using quality ingredients and traditional Italian methods, Evercream has over 30 flavours to choose from. The selection includes gluten-free traditional ice cream, with flavours including Baileys and Scorched Almond, Dark Dutch Chocolate, and White Chocolate Raspberry Swirl. Get lickin’.

Now with two locations (second site now open in Norwood), The Seasonal Garden Cafe is famous for its cakes for the dietary conscious. Most are vegan, gluten-free, raw, refined sugar-free and dairy-free, catering for all sorts of needs and desires. While the offerings do change, some of the top shocolate flavours that may adorn the cake fridge include Chocolate Beetroot Cake, Chocolate Salted Caramel Cheesecake, Choc Orange and Almond Cake, Chocolate Peanut, Mint Chocolate and the yummiest raspberry and chocolate gluten-free brownies in town. They also make incredible wedding and special occasion cakes.
