Frothtacular South Australian Beer Guide

Put down the shiraz and grab a frothy, there’s more to SA than outstanding wine – we do a pretty good job on the beer front too. Here’s the frothtacular South Australian beer guide, for our favourite South Australian venues to indulge in the delicious yeasty beverage.


1. The Wheatsheaf Hotel

The Wheatsheaf Hotel

Known as one of the pioneers of the craft beer scene in Adelaide, The Wheaty is a longtime favourite of the beer connoisseur. A relaxed pub environment to enjoy many a fine ale, expect a brewery out back, 13 taps and a large selection of bottles and cans from around the globe. You’ll often find food trucks parked out front to keep you nourished. There’s also a great beer garden, regular live music in the ‘tin shed’ and art on display.

2. The Gilbert Street Hotel

A popular after-work haunt on a Friday, sell-out chicken wing Thursday’s and an array of ever changing tap beer – with a decent selection of bottles. The Gilbert is also a frequent hangout for local brewers. Decent schnit too.

A New Orleans-inspired eatery that serves decent grub, NOLA also has 16 taps which are changed regularly. They also flaunt an impressive list of one-off and rare release bottles.

4. Crafers Hotel

Crafers Hotel

Known for their massive wine collection and world-class sommelier, the Crafers Hotel also sports a beer list that should please most beer wankers. Not wanting to leave anyone out – they’ll still pour a Heineken for the uneducated.

1. Lobethal Bierhaus

If you’re in the hills and have a hankering for an excellent beer, pop into Lobethal Bierhaus. Order yourself a tasting paddle, sit by the fire and enjoy. Takeaway six-packs and growlers are available for your home drinking pleasure. The kitchen cooks some sensational grub too.

2. Brewboys

Brewboys have created one of the best man caves (ladies welcome) in Adelaide. Delicious beer, garden to drink it in, pool table, live music and smoked meat. What else do you need?

3. Little Bang

Just out of town in the backstreets of Stepney, you’ll find Little Bang Brewing Co’s brewery and cellar door. Regular BBQ’s, quiz nights, food trucks and of course brilliant beer on tap – and available for takeaway.

4. Smiling Samoyed

Next time someone suggests a trip south to sample some of the world’s best wine, you should put your foot down and politely demand a visit to Smiling Samoyed Brewery to sample some of the world’s best beer. Dog-friendly, palatable pizza and award winning beer.

1. Sturt Street Cellars

Sturt Street Cellars

Attached to The Kings Head, Sturt Street Cellars is about all things South Australian. The fridge is packed with the finest brews from around the state. They’ll also can tap beer for you to take home. Handy.

2. Belair Fine Wines

Belair Fine Wines

Home of The Great Wall of Beer, Belair Fine Wines boasts one of the biggest selections of beer in any bottle shop. Whilst you may not be able to see it from space you’ll definitely be sucked into a place where time doesn’t exist. ‘Just popping to the bottle-o’ may take hours.

3. Goodwood Cellars

Goodwood Cellars

Goodwood Cellars has a solid selection of local and imported brews. Knowledgeable staff will also help your mum pick the best brew for you. They also fill growlers and host ‘meet the brewer’ sessions.
