Alinta Ratnaike loves Bowden so much she tied the knot there. She shares some of her favourite places to eat, drink, play, and relax.
My now husband Sam and I moved to Bowden in September 2015. We had been living a few streets over in Hindmarsh and liked the area for its proximity to both the city and the western suburbs. It is super central and most places we need to go are only 15 to 20 minutes away. I work in Semaphore so it’s easy to get to work but we still also enjoy easy access to the hustle and bustle of the city.
The suburb has a very laid back and relaxed feel and during the week does not feel overly busy. I like being able to walk to Plant 4 or other local cafes for coffee in the morning. There are often community events on there as well as the parklands just across the road. In terms of apartment-style living we also really enjoy this – our building is swipe entry so I always feel very safe at home.
We bought an off the plan two-bedroom, two bathroom apartment. It is across the road from Conroy’s [Smallgoods company] so often we can smell bacon in the afternoons (not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing). We were also attracted to the government grants available at the time (no stamp duty, some building grants) and the off the plan style allowed us to save a bit before getting our mortgage.
Bread And Butter
I am a small business owner of Barry’s Burgers and Royal Copenhagen Ice Creamery, both on Semaphore Road. I love small business and entrepreneurship; this is probably also a reason why I like this area so much. There are so many little businesses starting up and lots of young people who are starting them. Sam is a plumber so being so central also makes it easy for him to service lots of different areas. He is also a big sports fan so being close to Adelaide Oval is also useful.
While You’re Here
The Plant 4 markets [Wednesday, Friday and Saturday] are great for meeting friends – there’s something for everyone. We will often grab dinner to take away from there on a Wednesday night. If I am home during the week I will always get lunch from The Lost Loaf– they do amazing sourdough baguettes on Wednesdays and Fridays. We are also spoilt for great coffee – The Loose Caboose and Nutrition Republic are favourites. Nearby, Queen Street is also great. Pizza Meccanica serves great pizza. The owners are a couple and incorporate their ‘day jobs’ (he is a graphic designer and she is a hairdresser so each has a space in the building for that, then do pizzas on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
We held our wedding reception at Plant 4 (after twisting [owner] Jono Kaitatzis’s arm to let us as it was the first wedding event they had done!) We love the casual style of the upstairs area and the fact that it was so close to home. We hired a great Airbnb in Brompton for the boys to get ready in and my bridesmaids and I got ready at our apartment.
I am seven months pregnant at the moment so this will be our baby’s first home. I am looking forward to being able to make use of the parks and enjoy the area more day-to-day while being at home. I certainly think we’ll be here for a few years – we love our apartment, the vibe of the area and the location. I think the deciding factor will eventually be space.
