Ten Heaps Good South Australian Podcasts

10 Heaps Good Podcasts

The ease of podcast production has given voice to hundreds of exciting minds – funny, sporty, culinary, business, piss-takey minds. You name it, SA has got em’ – we’re a talented bunch. Here’s a selection of some of our fave South Australian podcasts coming from our iced-coffee fuelled collective genius.

Adelaide Podcasts - The Bad Cast

1.The Badcast

Listen to the Badcast, and you can be sure the team of three will delve into the important issues, whether they are discussing the best (worst) pickup lines or Google’s incognito mode. Many of the laughs spout from the way the blokes interact, with the banter reaching astronomical heights, such as when Big Al attempts to drink six beers in a minute. It can sometimes seem like you’re catching up with a few mates down at the local, rather than sitting on your own with a set of headphones in. And do keep your headphones in, please – there is a tad too much crass language for Karen from accounts.

Adelaide Podcasts - Rooster Radi

2. Rooster Radio

This is one for the business up and comers, who can tune into entrepreneurs and pros across various fields (business, leadership, marketing, science, technology, health, and hospitality) who have made it in the big leagues. The team tell the stories of successful ventures, as well as the not-so-pretty failed ones, all with the goal of learning how to conduct oneself with success in mind. Tune in if you think your professional performance could do with a brush-up.

Adelaide Podcasts - Adelaide Jerks

3. Adelaide Jerks

Adelaide Jerks is bound to make you laugh. Almost nothing is off limits. The podcast features examinations of failed Craigslist connections, letters from teenagers and subsequent drunken attempts to solve their life problems, and reading of overly enthusiastic reviews for ‘dangerous’ sex toys. Recently it held the Winter of Cruise, indulging its Tom Cruise obsession to an unprecedented level over the course of many, many podcasts. Wannabe scholars of Cruise, move aside. Adelaide Jerks has a fan in Fritz cover artist Donovan Christie – discover his picks here. Definitely not safe for work. You’ve been warned.

Adelaide Podcasts - The Adelaide Show

4. The Adelaide Show

Each week this podcast team chats with a local South Australian who is pursuing their passion. With a casual and comfortable vibe, the hosts drink and review wine, act like the friends they are and chat about how different folk deal with different challenges. Previous episodes include clarifying how modern music is made (guitars are so 2000), discussing whether sex work in the state should be decriminalised and exploring the difficulties of ageing.

Adelaide Podcasts - Head of a Codfish

5. Head Of A Codfish

Firstly, the name. It’s a Portuguese idiom loosely translated as ‘something you know to be true without seeing it directly’. The host explains that a lot of people feel they aren’t juggling the responsibilities of work and children in the best way possible, but remain unsure of what the best way is. The goal of this podcast is to show people the codfish’s head, so to speak, by discussing the best ways to balance life’s major responsibilities. It’s perfect for those who are thinking about having children but don’t want to go in guns blazing, as well as for existing parents who are starting to feel guilty about grandma’s perpetual babysitting.

Adelaide Podcasts - By The Glass

6. By The Glass

Two locals hone in on the best South Australian food and booze and the industry that produces them. The podcast brings in famous foodies and Adelaide hospitality stalwarts, such as food critic John Lethlean or co-owner of Pink Moon Saloon, Marshal King. And the hosts themselves aren’t randoms off the street. Both are super qualified, with Alister running the classy bar Clever Little Tailor and Chris equipped with radio and journalism experience. Tune in, and in no time you’ll be able to comment on your late night yiros with more than a half-cut groan of delight. Keep an eye out for our favourite train-loving guitar strummer, David Blumbergs‘ episode.

Adelaide Podcasts - Crow Crap

7. Crow Crap

The podcast with a distinctive colour scheme: red, blue and yellow. Betts are, this is the best Adelaide Crows supporter podcast you can tune into. Listening to Crow Crap is the perfect way to recap the game you missed, or to hear a passionate breakdown of what the Crows aced and what they messed up in any given round. It’s not limited to the Crows either. Expect discussions of other teams, the humorous side of the game and a few sly digs at Port Adelaide. Have it on in your car, but not on the windscreen, thanks.

Adelaide Podcasts - Deviant Women

8. Deviant Women

Join Alicia and Lauren as they discuss deviant women who bucked the trends and who flipped the system the bird. Whether these women are historical, fictional, mythological or contemporary – they are certainly badass. Sometimes the lives the hosts revisit are those of admirable Joan of Arc figures. Other times they explore less salubrious characters, such as Lizzy O’Dea, a Townsviller who casually shot her enemy in the 1920s. Listeners of any gender are bound to be entertained.

Adelaide Podcasts - PPP

9. Publish, Perish or Podcast

Join a handful of researchers on their fortnightly forays into science. The podcast appears to have several goals. For one, it attempts to make science engaging by incorporating humour and doing away with overcomplicated jargon. At the same time, it explores the often unthought about behind the scenes of being a scientist, from the hilarious anecdotes to the necessity of networking to the bureaucratic barriers. Find out what the people handling the beakers are feeling. It’s pretty fascinating.

Adelaide Podcasts - Vinyl Soul

10. Vinyl Soul

This podcast describes itself as dedicated to the ‘soundtrack of our lives’. Smoothly produced, host Aiden G chats with big music names every episode, such as Hanson, Seth Sentry and Birds of Tokyo. Guided by thoughtful questions, bands and performers discuss their origins, new music, side projects, influences, touring anecdotes, and everything else behind the scenes. With samplings of music to keep things exciting, this blog is a must for anyone who finds themselves tapping their foot when a banger comes on.

ADElol is a great new podcast that deserves to be on people’s subscription list. Bite sized local history lessons with a twist of humour.
I’ve already been listening to the Adelaide Show, Badcast and Jerks for some time.

We can see by all those exclamation marks that you feel very passionately about AdeLOL, we’ll definitely have to give it a listen. This is by no means a definitive list, there’s plenty of talented South Australian podcasters out there. Thanks for reading.

The guys from the Badcast used to do the drive shift on Fresh FM. Funny stuff.

Agree with this list. Vinyl Soul is tops. Badcast is pretty awesome too! Their Auscast stablemates ‘Once Upon A Tangent’ are a fun listen. Two guys who write advertising try pitching ideas for kids books – I believe SA based and just hitting their stride. Cool list guys!

Just missed out on ‘Once Upon A Tangent’ who are excellent, we’ll probably have to do another podcast list – too many talented individuals to limit to one article.

Huge thanks from The Adelaide Show team. What a bevvy of great podcasts here from SA. All wrapped up and mushed together in a delicious Fritz sandwich.

I am going to be the ‘promotes their own podcast in the comments section of an article about podcasts’ guy for a moment, apologies:

I’m one half of an Adelaide-based Simpsons podcast, ‘Pods in the Key of Springfield’. It’s a weekly podcast where we watch the show, reflect on it, and tap into how deeply the show has impacted our lives and identities. Like every podcast ever it’s…mostly about our friendship, and how integral the show is to it.

Also very happy to see my friend Lauren’s podcast Deviant Women on here, it’s very good!
