Top Seven Events In Adelaide This Weekend, 4 August

Top Weekend Events

“It can’t rain all the time,” sang someone, in a song, somewhere. The weather may have other ideas but there are heaps of events in Adelaide this weekend to keep the boredom at bay. What have we got? Well, SALA Festival kicks off, Pinot Palooza is back and the battle is on between Crows and Port. Here are our top picks.

1. Pinot Palooza

Pinot Palooza

Partial to a delicious pinot noir? Then have your wine glasses at the ready because Pinot Palooza, Australia’s largest annual pinot noir and music festival is back in Adelaide this Saturday. Sip and slurp your way through a plethora of delicious tipples from Australian wineries as well as some local South Australian made pinot from d’Arenberg and Henschke. To pair with your pinot, there’ll be sliders and grazing plates from Jessie Does Food, some Spanish specialities from Comida Catering Co and cheese platters from Woodside Cheese Wrights on offer. Held at the Old Adelaide Gaol, it’ll be a day to (hopefully) remember.

Saturday 5 August, 1pm to 6pm. Adelaide Gaol, 18 Gaol Road, Thebarton. Tickets: $65

2. Science Alive!

Science Alive

Discover the world of science this weekend with Science Alive, at the Adelaide Showgrounds. Now in its 12 year, it’s the perfect opportunity to take the kids along to learn how and why things work the way they do. Great for active minds, there’ll be over 60 exhibitors showcasing interactive, dynamic, educational and – most importantly – fun tutorials. To name a few, you can expect to see chemistry shows from the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and the University of Adelaide, astronomy experiences in huge Stardomes, and hear from science presenters Rob Morrison and Deane Hutton with their Curiosity Show presentation. Suitable for all ages and the whole family, it’s set to be a fantastic two days of science and technology.

Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 August, 9am to 5pm. Adelaide Showground, Goodwood Road, Wayville. Tickets: $15 adults, kids FREE

3. Round She Goes – Adelaide’s Preloved Fashion Market

Round She Goes

Vintage fashion lovers, Round She Goes is calling your name. Featuring over 50 stallholders selling women’s preloved designer, vintage and retro fashion, handmade jewellery and accessories, it’ll be hard not to find a treasure to take home (we’re betting more than a few). But it’s not all vintage either, you’ll have the chance to get your hands on designer clothes by Zimmerman, Carla Zampatti, Sass and Bide, Mimco, Finder Keepers and a whole lot more. The best part? You’ll look like you’ve stepped off the runway and spent a bit of dosh without actually breaking the bank.

Saturday 5 August 10am to 3pm. Woodville Town Hall, 74 Woodville Road, Woodville. Entry: $2

4. SALA Festival

SALA

Adelaide comes alive this month with the return of the state-wide celebration of Visual Art –  SALA Festival. With hundreds of exhibitions popping up all over state throughout August, it’s the perfect opportunity for home-grown South Aussie artists to showcase their art to the public. Expect to be blown away by the incredible talent and be spoilt for choice. Explore the program, decide on your top picks and be sure to snap up a ticket before it’s too late.

Open from 1 to 31 August. Various locations around Adelaide. Discover the program

5. Mt Crawford Challenge

Mt Crawford

Pull out your active wear and lace up your runners for the Mount Crawford Challenge this Sunday. Run or walk through the stunning course with tracks along native woodlands and pine plantations, with the longer courses taking you in and around the Watts Gully Native Forest Reserve and Warren Conservation Park. Choose between three distances: 13km, 24km or 35km and prepare yourself for a big day (and possibly jelly legs later). If you’re not up to running have no fear, walkers are welcome in the 13km distance. Kick start your fitness journey and register for the event before midday on Friday 4 August. Running just might be your thing after all.

Sunday 6 August 7am to 1pm, Chalks Road Camp Ground, Mount Crawford. Cost: from $21

6. Showdown 43 – Crows v Port

Showdown

It’s getting toward the pointy end of the season and the fight is on between rivals, Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide this weekend. Crows are top of the ladder so the stakes are high. No Crows supporter wants to give up top spot because of a loss to Port – it’d seriously hurt their egos. Fifth placed Port are looking for an upset, the chance to slip in the top four and to stick it to their foes. The scores are level at 21 each, so whoever wins this one has the bragging rights for the best South Aussie side. If you haven’t managed to score a ticket to the sold out match, be sure to catch the Showdown at a local pub on a big screen. Try the Alma Tavern, The Lion or The Highway if you’re after a great beer garden and plenty of like-minded footy fans to sit back and enjoy the game. We say, bring on Showdown number 43.

Sunday 6 August, 4.10pm. Adelaide Oval. More information

7. Peel Street Celebrations

Peel Street Celebrations

You may have already heard… But your favourite laneway full of some of Adelaide’s best bars is now closed to vehicle traffic, so it’s time to celebrate! Following on from a successful trial, Renewal SA and the City of Adelaide have partnered up with local traders to implement a permanent closure so there’s more room for you to wander and enjoy the atmosphere. Celebrations kick off this Friday night from 5pm with an immersive ‘meet the maker’ style pop-up experience and local traders showcasing their delicious food, wine, beer and hand-crafted cocktails. You’ll even have the chance to try your tastebuds with tastings and experience a few demonstrations. Adelaide’s vibrant bar scene just became even better. Don’t miss the party!

Friday 4 August, from 5pm. Peel Street and Leigh Street, Adelaide. More info
